Week 13: The Thing

For this week's movie, I decided to play something totally just for fun, since it's our last film.

"John Carpenter's The Thing" (1982, 109 mins), starred Kurt Russel, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Donals Moffat, Richard Masur, David Clannon, Charles Hallahan, Joel Polis, T.K. Carter, Richard Dysart, Thomas G. Waites, and Peter Maloney. It was written by Bill Lancaster and directed by the famous horror movie director, John Carpenter. This Scifi-Horror-Suspense film involves a parasitic alien that can assimilate and imitate other lifeforms. The themes are apocalypse and paranoia. The film didn't do very well at the time, primarily because E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, and Blade Runner came out in theaters at the same time. It's remembered today for it's scariness and the excellent special effects for the time.

Week 12: Stand by Me

"Stand By Me" (1986, 89 mins), starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Keifer Sutherland, was based on 'The Body', a novella by Stephen King. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. Guide.

Week 10: Rain Man

This week's movie is "Rain Man" (1988, 113mins). It starred Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass. It's a drama about a self-centered, wheeler-dealer who learns his estranged father left most of his money to an unknown brother, who happens to be an autistic savant.

In 1989, the film won Oscars for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Dustin Hoffman), Best Director (Barry Levinson), Best Writing - Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Ronald Bass and Barry Morrow), and Best Picture.

I chose this movie because it was so popular at the time. Many of the lines of dialog have become part of American language and our shared culture.
